Sainz: “There is something that is not working in the team, in the wind tunnel”
Carlos Sainz finished 15th in the classification of the 2026 F1 British GP, although this Sunday he will start 14th due to a 3-place penalty that fell to Gasly. In any case, the Madrid native will have a very difficult time qualifying for the points with his current car.
His Williams has not improved what he expected with the new front wing that they brought to the British track and Carlos Sainz was forceful when analyzing the difficult situation of a team that has gone from being the big surprise of 2025 and the 5th best team, with which Carlos achieved several podiums, to seeing how the team does not finish starting this season after the initial problems. His car allows him to move into Q2 and fight with the Haas, but nothing more.
“We are testing things, we are trying to make this front wing work, but it is clear that there is something that is not working in the team, in the wind tunnel”he expressed on ‘DAZN’.
“We are not finding improvements that bring us closer to that Racing Bulls, which is 7 or 8 tenths ahead. To give you an idea: last year we were 6 tenths behind McLaren when McLaren won races and we made some podiums and Top-5. This year the Racing Bulls is 8 tenths away and then the Ferrari and the Mercedes, almost 2 seconds away. So we are very very far away and we have to see how we can improve,” he continued in his reflection. Then, they asked him if the poor performance of the new parts could be due to a change in procedure in the team.
“No. What has changed is the regulations and the way of finding aerodynamic points is different from last year. It is clear that this aerodynamics, this regulation, we do not understand well because it is clear that we are not managing to improve at the pace of others and we also started with a worse base (car), as it was at the beginning of the season. So we have to start thinking, go back to the studio and see what we are doing that is not improving the situation.
Summary of your ranking
“It was a horrible flight, but we were able to get into Q2, and if I had done a perfect lap we could have beaten the Haas that beat us. But the thing is that the car was so complicated to drive throughout the session, that it was very difficult to do a perfect lap. But you have seen it with Alex (Albon, his teammate) too, who was a little behind.”
