Discussion, boos and tension: the controversy between Draper and Medvedev in the Indian Wells quarterfinals

A tense moment was experienced in the quarterfinal duel between Daniil Medvedev (11th in the world ranking) and Jack Draper (14th) in Indian Wells. This, in a decisive context: after the Russian had won the first set with a comfortable 6-1, everything was even in the second set. When the British, and champion in California in 2025, served 5-5, everything exploded.

And Draper was 5-5 and 0-15, when a rally was affected by hindranceproduct of a video review requested by Daniil. The reason? Before Medvedev left the ball in the net, he complained that Jack made a gesture in the middle of the point. After the umpire’s review, everything went from 15-15 to 0-30and later bankruptcy of the Russian.

After the decision, the 24-year-old tennis player showed his anger and went to argue face to face with the match judge, in which Medvedev also intervened.

Finally, after the outcome a few minutes later, both players had a chat when they greeted each other on the net. This, while a rain of boos fell from the public present in Indian Wells. “You won the match fairly. However, I don’t think it distracted you.“, declared the native of Great Britain.

Medvedev will seek to get into the final of the first Masters 1000 of the season. To do this, he will have to beat the winner of the duel between Carlos Alcaraz (1st) and Cameron Norrie (29th).
