Davis Cup: Spain suffered but defeated the Czech Republic and will play against Germany
Spain took the first step to become champion again in the Davis Cup. David Ferrer’s team won the decisive doubles with Marcel Granollers and Pedro Martínez against Jakub Mensik and Tomás Machac (7-6 and 7-6) and advanced to the semi-finals.
The series had started on the wrong foot for the reds, since Mensik had defeated Pablo Carreño Busta 7-5 and 6-4. However, when Spain was on the ropes, Jaume Munar appeared to rescue them.
After an hour and 20 minutes of play, defeated Jiri Lehecka 6-3, 6-4 and gave the six-time salad bowl champions the chance to define everything in the doubles.
In a very tight match, where the Czechs chose not to play with specialist Adam Pavlasek and replace him with Mensik, the Iberians ended up winning the match due to details. Despite the two set points that the Eastern European team had, they did not know how to take advantage of their opportunities and went down to a nation that was really a candidate for the title.
With the pass to the semifinals defined, Spain will clash against Germany. The German team turned the series against Argentina and won 2 to 1 in an epic match. On the other side of the bracket, Italy will play against the Cinderella of the tournament: Belgium.
