“I am committed to taking Mexico to a higher level”
The new mexican coach, Rafael Marquezcelebrated the high-quality human material with which he will work from now on to try to put Mexican soccer one step higher than where it is. “There is a good base, with young players and others with experience who will be important in this transition stage: it is not time to slow down but to accelerate. A great job has been done and we must continue it,” said the ‘Kaiser’ in a video circulated on the national team’s networks.
Recognized as one of the three best footballers in Mexico, with a notable time at FC Barcelona and five participations in World Cups, Márquez was called in the summer of 2024 as technical assistant to coach Javier Aguirre, who left the position after the elimination in the 2026 World Cup last Sunday.
As agreed almost two years ago, the retired defender was ratified as a substitute for ‘Vasco’ and will take charge of the national team from now on. “I arrive with the responsibility of making the Mexican player better; I will try to be close to the minor teams that we want to enhance because to have good football, it is necessary to complete important processes at the base,” he said.
In his first statements as coach of Mexico, Rafa Márquez thanked Javier Aguirre for having included him in his coaching staff, which allowed him to grow as a coach. “It has been a great learning experience, which was what was intended,” he accepted.
The coach described the support of the fans in Mexico’s five games in the World Cup as incredible and promised to respond with work to the people’s dedication. “I want to tell you that I am committed to taking the national team to a better level; that you continue to support and believe in the joint effort we are making,” he concluded.
