Russell, critic: “I need to improve. Antonelli deserves to be ahead in the championship”

“If I want to fight for the championship, my performance has to improve. I need to work better with my team. We have to get the most out of everything.” In a statement to SkyGeorge Russel He has been forceful with his own season and has also praised Andrea Kimi Antonellihis teammate mercedes. “He’s done a better job than me this year so far, so he deserves to be ahead of me (in the championship).”

The Antonelli advantage

The Briton has delved into the superior performance of the Italian driver. “I’m not sure if the fortunes have evened out or not. However, based on my performance and his performance over these nine races, I think a 25-point difference in his favor is probably about right.”

“Whether it should be 25 points, 10 or 35 is a debate. Obviously, I also lost 15 points in Monaco with the ‘drive-through’ penalty. I think being between 10 and 30 points behind would be quite fair,” stressed the number 63, who is currently one race away from the world championship points lead.

The Mercedes car in 2026

Russell achieved a second place in the British Grand Prix after a mechanical failure by Antonelli and a wrong strategic decision by Ferrari. “Although the sensations (with the car) were good, the lap times were slow. (…) I still have a hard time understanding this car.”

“Although I am very grateful to be on the podium this weekend (at Silverstone), I am probably less satisfied than in Canada, when I had to retire while I was leading,” said the former Williams driver.

The fight for the title

“Right now we have a very close fight with Ferrari.” Russell did not rule out those from Maranello after Charles’ victory Leclerc on the English layout. “It’s not just Kimi and I. Lewis (hamilton) is still very close. “We have to improve.”

“I left Monaco three races ago 68 points behind and I leave here 25,” Russell recalled. However, the Norfolk-born pilot also stressed that the situation may change if he does not take a step forward. “Yes, I’m happy with it, but it’s not going to continue like this forever unless results and performance improve.”
