Coors Field covered in surprise snowfall before Dodgers-Rockies game
Surprise mid-April snowfall covers Coors Field in frigid start to Dodgers-Rockies series
DENVER — Play ball! And be careful with the snowballs.
The Los Angeles Dodgers and the Colorado Rockies were greeted by snow that, surprisingly, covered the Coors Field field.
The four-game series got off to a chilly start on Friday.
Dodgers pitcher Emmet Sheehan took advantage of the frigid mid-April day. He went out onto the field in his shorts to build a snowman about four hours before the first pitch of the game.
The snow stopped about three hours before the game began and Colorado’s field maintenance crew, which placed a tarp over the infield to protect it, used a snowplow to clear the outfield.
Almost 8 centimeters of snow accumulated on the ground.

For the first pitch, the temperature was 2 degrees Celsius with sunny conditions and the only traces of snow were in the pine trees behind the center field wall.
White gave way to green grass after shovels lashed out at the snow, which fell a day after Denver’s high temperature was 24 degrees. Celsius.
The start of the game did not mark the end of the teams’ weather hardships. The National Weather Service issued a freeze warning for the Denver area, in effect from 8 p.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Saturday, with freezing temperatures falling overnight to the range of four to eight below zero.
The expected maximum is 13 for this Saturday, according to the meteorological service, and 23 on Sunday, before reaching 26 on Monday to close the series.
The Dodgers arrive after concluding a six-game homestand Wednesday in Los Angeles, where the high was 23 on Friday.
