Tommy Paul defeated Tiafoe in an epic match and will be Burruchaga’s rival in the final in Houston
Final confirmed in the Houston ATP 250! Tommy Paul (21st in the world ranking) defeated his compatriot Frances Tiafoe (18th), in an epic match, 7-5, 4-6 and 7-6 (7)in almost three hours of play. In this way, the American will face the Argentine Roman Burruchaga (77th) in search of the title.
A 100% North American duel between two highly ranked tennis players. The first set was so even that, in the first and only opportunity Paul had, he managed to break Tiafoe’s serve and, with this, take over the lead in a very close 7-5.
However, this was not going to be all that Frances had to give, since she had her reaction in the second chapter: she broke in the fifth game and then knew how to suffer to avoid the danger that Tommy caused her in her search for recovery and to level the score. Thus, he sealed the 6-4 and took everything to the last set.
In this set, everything was different from how the match was taking place and, in turn, better for the show: four breaks of service throughout the entire set, two per side, led the definition to the tiebreak. In that tiebreaker Paul was able to win the big victory, but not before suffering: he was up 6-4, Tiafoe managed to save the two match points, and did so again in a third, but not in the fourth: 9-7 the tiebreak in favor of Tommy and, with this, the pass to the final.
Burruchaga and Paul will meet for the first time on the professional circuit and it will mean, nothing more and nothing less, than a trophy. It would be the first for the Argentine and the fifth for the United States.
