Mike James does not accept Barça’s retreat and the case may end up in court
Barça wants to wipe the slate clean after three years of bad decisions in the offices, but this new stage begins with the club repeating some of the mistakes of the past right off the bat. The last hot potato that Barça has on the table has to do with the backtracking on the signing of Mike James, which could end up costing the entity a significant financial penalty.
Barça and the American point guard from AS Monaco had reached a total agreement that provided for the player’s arrival at the Palau for two seasons. At the top of the section there were doubts about the incorporation of James, who has a strong character and a long history of controversy, many of them on social networks. Furthermore, the point guard will turn 36 next August and his signing did not fit with the idea of rejuvenating the club’s first team. However, the vision of Xavi Pascual ended up being imposed, who had had the player at his command during his time at Panathinaikos (2016-18) and considered him the best option available on the market after the failure in the offensive for Sylvain Francisco and the unattainable amounts that other clubs could offer for Jean Montero.
The story changed completely when Pascual informed the club of his decision to make use of his termination clause to not continue at the end of the season. Barça then decided that James no longer had a place in the new project and so informed the American. With manager Juan Carlos Navarro already removed from his duties, this reversal was decided after an internal debate between the two managers responsible for the section this season, Josep Cubells and Sisco Pujol, the sports director Mario Bruno Fernández and someone else from the club’s technical organization chart.
James’ anger was monumental when he learned of Barça’s change of position, since he had even already started looking for a house in Barcelona. And James is not one of those people who resigns himself in the face of adversity, he is not afraid to go to the fight. The problem for Barça is that the American point guard’s contract was already signed by both parties, so it has legal validity. Some information indicated at the time that negotiations had broken down. None of that, the negotiations were closed and transferred to a contract, so now Barça will have to reach an agreement with James to prevent him from suing them in court.
The positions of both parties are very far apart and everything suggests that it will be the justice system that will make the final decision on the matter. It is not something new for FC Barcelona, which already took the same path when it unilaterally decided to dismiss Nikola Mirotic and Cory Higgins in the summer of 2023 when both had contracts in force. In both cases, justice forced Barça to provide significant compensation to its two former players, for an amount similar to the net amount they would have received if they continued playing for the club. The only advantage for Barça was that these amounts were no longer included in the section’s budget (they went to the loss chapter), so they did not affect the financial fair-play of football.
Barça basketball already has another judicial front open at this time for reasons similar to those that occur now with Mike James. The club will go to trial for a lawsuit for damages filed against it by Thomas Heurtel, with which an agreement was reached in January 2025, which Barça later backed out of when the player and his family had already traveled from China to Barcelona to close the operation. The case is expected to be decided in 2027.
