Marcel Granollers on his leadership without Alcaraz and the chance to have Zeballos as a rival
Marcel Granollers highlighted, after his victory in the doubles with Pedro Martínez against the Czech Republic, the significance of Spain’s passage to the Davis Cup semifinals. Furthermore, without Carlos Alcaraz on the team, he spoke about the chance to face to his friend Horacio Zeballos.
Winner of two Grand Slams this year along with the Argentine, Roland Garros and the United States, Granollers came on stage to resolve the tie with Pedro Martínez.
David Ferrer, Captain, placed him as the leader of the team, something he rejected. “I don’t feel like the leader. We all have a very important role. Without those from Switzerland, without those from Denmark… this is a team and we need all the pieces. None is more important than the other. We are clear about it and that is why we won today’s tie. We are united and it is the only way to operate at Davis. Big names can give qualifying rounds, but the group is the most important thing,” he declared at a press conference.
Carlos Alcaraz (1st), who last weekend played against Jannik Sinner in the final of the ATP Finals, decided to drop out due to edema in the hamstring of the right leg. And the experience falls to Marcel.
Now, there is a chance that if Argentina eliminates Germany, he will face his usual teammate, Horacio Zeballos. “We joked when we saw the painting. It would be a strange match because they have been together for seven years. But we are used to other colleagues in the federation. Each one will defend their own. If one of us doesn’t do well, at least one will be in the final. I hope it’s me.”
Martínez was a great ally of Granollers with great points, but he surrendered to his teammate’s play: “Anyone who plays with Marcel has a lot going for him. He covers a lot of ground, I adapt to his way of playing. “Especially when I serve, I try to position myself so that he catches the first ball.”
Granollers also appreciated Martínez’s great work: “He is a great player and he shows it on the circuit. He is one of those we have to thank for being here. He is bravewhen he has to face situations he does it. We already saw in Denmark what he is capable of doing. “We have to keep dreaming.”
“I feel comfortable playing doubles because now I only train specific things for doubles. With Pedro I have played several matches. I think we have chemistry“We know each other well, we know how to play well,” he concluded.
