Jayden Nelson replaces Marcelo Flores in Canada’s squad for the 2026 World Cup

The Canadian men’s team announced this Tuesday the incorporation of Jayden Nelson to his squad for the 2026 World Cup to replace Marcelo Flores, who will be out due to injury.

Canada explained that Nelson, a player for Austin FC of Major League Soccer (MLS), will take Flores’ place after the attacker of Tigres UANL, of Liga MX, underwent surgery on June 5 to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee.

Flores suffered the injury during the final of the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup, a setback that will prevent him from participating in the tournament that Canada will play as one of the host teams.

Nelson, 23, is having a good time with Austin FC in the MLS and joins the Canadian camp a few days before the debut of the team led by Jesse Marsch in the World Cup.

The loss of Flores represents a significant loss for Canada due to the offensive versatility of the player, who could act as both a winger and a midfielder and who had been a regular part of the team’s recent call-ups.
