FIA changes rules for Japan classification

The entity, in collaboration with the 11 F1 teams, determined a modification in energy management for the Suzuka qualifying, the third date of the World Cup.

One day before the start of the Japanese GP, the third date of Formula 1, the International Automobile Federation decided to make a change in the energy recovery regulations for the time of classification.

The FIA announced, after meeting with the 11 teams and the power unit suppliers, reduce from 9 MJ to 8 MJ the amount of energy that cars will be able to recharge during qualifying. This is precisely one of the most critical points of discussion of the technical regulations released this year.

During the first two dates of the year (Australia and China), cars could recharge up to 9 MJ during a qualifying lap. That was lowered to 8 MJ in Japan. This will cause the reduction of the energy recovery practices that pilots must carry out by lifting their foot off the accelerator at the end of the straights, moving forward with inertia and superclipping.

The FIA closed the statement announcing that joint work will continue to adopt evolutions in energy management and there will be more meetings in the coming weeks.
