Fernando Alonso: “It was frustrating. I don’t think the car knew where it was in the lap, because it activated the turbo in places where it didn’t need it and it didn’t activate it on the straights”
Fernando Alonso had to fight again Singaporebetween walls, with problems in his Honda engine, after having changed the turbo of his power unit due to the breakdown that affected him in the sprint race and in qualifying on Saturday, when he had no power at the exit of the corners. But a day later, the man from Oviedo found a new failure in the Japanese power unit that they had not seen in previous races.
“We have to solve the problems: drivability and turbo lag. “There are a couple of things that are costing us a lot of lap time and we found out the hard way this weekend.”said the two-time F1 champion, who despite this, continued to fight with everything on the track, despite knowing that he had no chance of scoring.
He was even seen hitting the steering wheel, very angry, when just after lifting his foot and letting the leader Verstappen pass he saw Max enter the pits. He knew that he had lost time in that maneuver, and even though he was not fighting for a good result, that unnecessary loss of time hurt him because he was giving everything. Perfect example of his fight and insistence, regardless of the position he occupies on the track.
After the race, in which he finished 16th, in statements to the written media, as reported by ‘Motorsport.com’, the man from Oviedo warned of a problem in the Honda engine that they had not seen before.
“Last weekend in Sepang, we didn’t have any problems. Even in Baku, where the first two sectors were very winding and very slow, we didn’t have any problems,” he commented. But it appeared in Singapore.
“I had a lot of problems in the race. I think less with regards to the turbo (since he changed it before the race), but there were many problems with the deployment (electrical energy)”.
We had many problematic energy deployments in the race, as (the energy) was not deployed at the right place and time, especially after the safety car.
“Especially after the virtual safety car, I don’t think the car knew where it was in the lap, because it activated the turbo in places where it didn’t need it and didn’t activate it on the straights. So that was a little frustrating.”he said, in words that should point towards the ‘software‘and he algorithm which calculates and decides how much electrical energy is delivered to the pilot at each point of the circuit.
Sepang, we didn’t have any problems. Not in Baku either, where the first two sectors were very winding and slow
“We had a little understeer in the race, which we couldn’t solve (they suffered from it since the beginning of the weekend), and then, many problematic energy displays in the racesince it was not deployed at the right place and time, especially after the safety car. We lost many places and a lot of ground with that lack of deployment, so it is something that we must review,” he said.
Alonso assured that this way it was impossible to attack anyone. “When we were behind Checo Pérez or behind any other car, then we lost between 200 and 300 meters on each straight. So it was an impossible task,” he said. And despite this, he continued fighting until the last turn.
