Benfica returns to winning ways
He Benfica returned this Sunday to the path of victory after its defeat in the classic against Porto by beating the Vitória de Guimarães (2-0) in the eighth day of the Portuguese Primeira Liga.
Benfica took the field with wounded pride after having lost against their biggest rival before the national team break (3-1) and responded with a suffocating offensive in the first half that bore fruit in the 24th minute, when the Swede Samuel Dahl he signed the 1-0 after a combination with the Greek Vangelis Pavlidis.
The Lisbon team’s dominance eased in the second half, allowing Vitória to grow on the pitch, although without posing a real danger to the ‘eagles’ goal.
The victory was not cemented for Benfica until the 75th minute, when Georgiy Sudakov established the 2-0 with the help of the Argentine duo formed by Gianluca Prestianni and Claudio Echeverri.
Prestianni went up the left wing and passed the ball to Echeverri, who in turn gave it to the Ukrainian midfielder, who scored his first goal of the season with a low shot.
This victory allows Benfica to regain second place with 19 points, five behind the leader and champion, Porto, and one more than the third, Sporting.
