The Los Angeles Dodgers defer payments to seven players for more than $1 billion, which they will have to pay between 2028 and 2046


NEW YORK — The contracts of Blake Snell and Tommy Edman increased the obligations of Los Angeles Dodgers by deferred payments to more than 1 billion dollars that they must to seven players between 2028 and 2046.

The $182 million contract with Snell, announced Saturday, includes $66 million in deferred money that will be paid to him gradually through July 1, 2046, according to terms of the contract obtained by The Associated Press.

The five-year, $74 million deal for Edman, announced Friday, includes $25 million that will pay him deferred until July 1, 2044.

Los Angeles has deferred obligations of $1,006,500,000 with seven players between 2028 and 2046.

Snell’s average salary will count for $31.4 million annually toward the Dodgers’ luxury tax payroll and Edman approximately $12.9 million.

Snell will receive a $52 million signing bonus payable on Jan. 25 and an annual salary of $26 million, of which $13.2 million will be deferred annually. The deferred money will be paid in equal installments every July 1 between 2035 and 2046.

Los Angeles has a $10 million conditional club option for 2023 that could be exercised if Snell suffers a qualifying injury as specified in the contract and spends 90 or more consecutive days on the disabled list due to the injury and has not been traded.

If Snell is traded, he would receive a $5 million allocation bonus, which the team that acquires him will have to pay.

Two-way player Shohei Ohtani will receive $680 million from 2034 to 2043 as part of a record $700 million, 10-year contract that expires in 2033.

Outfielder/infielder Mookie Betts will receive $115 million of his salary from 2033 through 2044 and the final $5 million of his signing bonus will be paid from 2033 through 2035, all part of a $365 million, 12-year contract that ends in 2032.

First baseman Freddie Freeman will receive $57 million between 2028 and 2040 as part of the $162 million, six-year deal that ends in 2027.

Catcher Will Smith will get $50 million paid from 2034 to 2043 as part of a $140 million, 10-year contract through 2033.

Dominican outfielder Teoscar Hernández will receive $8.5 million from 2030 through 2039 as part of a one-year, $23.5 million deal in 2024.
