Chimezie Metu enters the scene to reinforce Barça’s inside game
Chimezie Metuan American power forward of Nigerian origin, 29 years old and 2.08 meters tall, played in the ranks of the Barça during 2024-25.
Although suffer a serious injury (rupture of the Achilles tendon) in the final stretch of the season, until then, Metu had offered a more than notable performance both in Euroleague (11 points, 4.8 rebounds and 11.8 average rating) as in Endesa League (13.2 points, 3.8 rebounds and PIR of 14), leaving great memories among Barça fans.
In fact, his departure from Barça was only somewhat ‘overshadowed’ by the rumor (not officially confirmed) that, before getting injured, Metu was negotiating, and had even reached an agreement in principle, with the Blaugrana’s greatest rival, real Madridto join the Madrid team the following season.
Despite his serious injury, which kept him away from the court for more than a year, the former NBA player had no shortage of offers and his signing for the club was even considered a given. AS Monaco or the Fenerbahce by Sarunas Jasikevicius and, once again, Real Madrid appeared on the scene… and Barça.
Finally, Metu ended up returning to the Endesa League, but to a completely unexpected destination: the DreamLand Gran Canariafor which he signed last March.
In the ranks of the Canary Islands team, despite not being able to avoid relegation to Primera FEB, he offered an excellent performance (14.1 points and 4.5 rebounds, in addition to a remarkable 50% success rate on three-pointers), which has once again awakened the interest of several European teams, especially from the Endesa League.
And according to information from the specialized portal ‘Shooting’Metu has two offers to continue in Spanish basketball: one from Baskonia and the other… Barça.
The Baskonista offer would be greater economically since the Vitorian club sees Metu as an important player. It would come to cover the gap that is going to be left Diakitewho paid his clause and will go to Dubai Basketball and, in addition, has a very coveted Cotonou-Nigerian passport because He would not occupy a non-EU position in the ACB.
Baskonia already has Simmons and Howard under contract and as non-EU nationals.
And as for Barça, the situation is very similar: in the absence of signing a second baseman and a forward, the fifth inside of the squad, which would be Metu if he says yes, is Cotonou avoiding accumulating another non-EU player.
Remember that the Barça team already has Will Clyburn who would occupy a non-EU position, like the US base Justin Robinsonwhose signing has already been agreed upon, and the center Moses Wright who will arrive from Zalrigis Kaunas. Precisely, the Lithuanian team has also been interested in Metu, but the Baltic team’s options seem smaller today.
We will see what the future holds for Metu, which aims, once again, to be one of the ‘soap operas’ of the summer in the transfer market.
