Lapeira frustrates rainbow McNulty in the Coppa Agostoni
The French Paul Lapeira (Decathlon CMA CGM) won this Sunday in Lissone (Italy) the Coppa Agostoni ahead of the new world champion, the American Brandon McNulty. Lapeira, 26, won the sprint of the group of seven escapees after covering 169.4 kilometers, beating McNulty and the Italian Andrea Raccagni Noviero.
He is the first Frenchman since Laurent Jalabert in 2002 – and only the second in the history of the event – to win this classic, which serves as preparation for the Giro de Lombardia, scheduled for next Saturday. “Today I had good legs; I did everything I could to get us there together and I went after Brandon when he tried to attack on the last climb. I knew he was the fastest if we reached the sprint,” declared the cyclist born in Fougères, who thus added his ninth victory as a professional and the second of the season.
Lapeira will take off this Monday at Bernocchi Cup and will close its Italian week by participating in the Three Valleys of Varesino race the next day. It will thus complete a long journey through the Italian classics.
Victory has been resisted McNulty, who was proclaimed world champion by surprise last Sunday in Montreal (Canada). He had finished tenth the day before in the Giro de Emilia, which was his first race wearing the rainbow jersey, and in the second he came within inches of adding his first victory with the multicolored jersey on.
