Alcaraz: “I didn’t expect to play in Vienna, but it is the best decision we could have made”

Carlos Alcaraz, number 3 in the world, winner this Sunday of the tournament Viennasaid that he did not expect to play in the Austrian capital and assured that requesting the invitation to participate was “the best decision” he could make with his team.

Carlos Alcaraz was intractable against the Australian Álex de Minaur, whom he won 6-1 and 6-4 to win their fourth title of the year.

“My team and I were very aware of Álex de Minaur’s high level and that his style is very dangerous. “The track was very slow, it is difficult to add power to each blow and we knew that he is very fast.”said Alcaraz, upon receiving the champion trophy in the center of the court.

“You can get a winning point against anyone but him, so I had to be very careful and focused, and I knew I had to stay focused from the beginning, increasing my speed and rhythm with each shot, trying to be aggressive so that he would have to play more aggressively and solidly than me,” he stated.

“I’m very happy to have found my rhythm and to have played well. It has been an exciting and incredible week, staying calm step by step and playing with more confidence on this surface. “I am very happy and looking forward to the rest of the season,” he said.

The Spanish tennis player thanked the Vienna public and his team for making him “enjoy the court again and forget the stress” and recalled his first time in the Austrian city.

“From the first day you have made me feel at home. In 2021 I reached the semifinals, at 18 years old, when I was nobody, and you made me feel at home, just like this year. This time I didn’t expect to play but asking for the invitation is the best decision I could have made,” he concluded.
