Why is Rafael Devers in a historic slum?

Rafael Devers has struck out 15 times and has not connected hits in the first five games; We put your slump in context

There are slow starts, there are slumps and then there is whatever Rafael Devers is going through.

The 28-year-old three times from the Boston Red Sox has been one of the best baseball batters since 2019, with three seasons of 30 homers, three seasons of 100 driven races and countless doubles.

Its first five 2025 games have been a nightmare. Is the equivalent of transferring Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees at the beginning of the season. Johnny Pesky It has the ball. Bucky Dent. The ball rolls between the legs of Bill Buckner. Aaron Boone. To name just some references of the Boston Red Sox. This is how these parties were developed for devers:

Game 1: 4-0, three strikeouts. Game 2: 4-0, four strikeouts. Game 3: 4-0, three strikeouts, ball base, RBI. Game 4: 4-0, two strikeouts, ball base. Game 5: 3-0, three strikeouts, two bases per ball

On the way, Devers became the first player to be struggled 10 times in the first three games of a team of a team, and that is not all.

He became the first player to stuck 12 times in the first four games of a team. And, yes, with 15 strikeouts in five games, broke the old record of 13, shared by Pat Burrell In 2001 and Byron Buxton in 2017. Returning to the end of 2024, when Devers fanned 11 times in his last four games, he became the fourth player with multiple strikeouts in nine consecutive commitments, and one of them was a pitcher (the other two were a rookie named Aaron Judge in 2016 and Michael A. Taylor in 2021).

With the difficulties of Devers, the Red Sox have also started with a bad footing, with a record of 1-4, after high expectations in preseason, including a defeat 8-5 against the Baltimore Orioles in the opening match, at home, on Monday. To be fair, not everything is Devers’s fault: Jarren Durán, Devers and Alex Bregman, the three best lineup batters, have a combined average of 62-11 (.177) without a home run.

But there is a question that weighs more in the mind of the nation of the Red Sox at this time: what really happens to Devers?

It is easy to say that it is simply not focused. Devers was news at the beginning of Spring Training after the Red Sox signed Bregman, saying that he did not want to move on to the designated hitter and that “the third base is my position.” He pointed out that when he signed its extension of 331 million dollars in January 2023, the directive promised him that it would be the third base of the team.

However, that was when a different administration was in charge. Bregman, winner of the gold glove in 2024, is the best third defensive base, so it makes sense to play there and that Devers moves, except that many players do not like to play as a designated batter. Some analysts even attribute a “designated batter penalty”, assuming that a player will hit worse there than when he plays on the ground. Although Devers, finally, gave up and said it would do anything to help the team, the situation was complicated for a few weeks.

But maybe it’s something else. Although Devers avoided surgery this low season, he spent trying to recover strength on both shoulders after dealing with pain and inflammation throughout 2024. He did not play in the field in spring training and only had 15 appearances on the plate. So maybe you are still oxidized, or bother your shoulders.

In fact, Statcast metrics show that their average batting speed has dropped from 72.5 mph in 2024 to 70.3 mph so far from 2025 (and that is a decrease from 73.4 MPH of 2023). Its ‘fast-shing’ rate has fallen from 34.2 percent in 2023 to 27.9 percent and 12.2 percent. Obviously, we are talking about an extremely small sample for this season, but it is clear that Devers is not generating the batting speed that we are used to seeing.

However, that does not explain the total inability to make contact. The Red Sox manager, Alex CoraHe told journalists after the series in Texas that Devers had made modifications in the placement of his feet, but had problems to reach the lines. After Monday’s game, Devers told journalists (through his interpreter) that “obviously, this is not a position that has covered in the past. So I have to get used to it. But I feel good, I feel good.”

What leads to this question: does this evil historical beginning mean? Since the batter started by demonstrating in 1973, three DH began the season with a closer streak longer than the 19-0 mark of Devers, so we deepen how the rest of their seasons were developed:

Don Baylorwith the 1982 angels (20-0). Baylor ended with a fairly typical season for him: .263/.329/.424, 24 home runs.

Evan Gattisof the stars of 2015 (23-0). Gattis hit .246 with 27 homers, not as well as in 2014 or 2016, but in line with their career numbers.

Curtis Terrywith the Rangers in 2021 (20-0). Terry was a rookie who ended up playing only 13 games in the big leagues.

Beyond the designated batter position,

Curtis Terry with the Rangers in 2021 (20-0). Terry was a rookie who ended up playing only 13 games in the big leagues.

Beyond the designated batter position, I looked in Baseball-Reference to players of the Era of the Commodines (since 1995) who started a season without hitting at least 20 appearances to the BAT throughout five games. That gave a list of … only seven players, including Evan Carter (22-0) and Anthony Rendón (20-0) last season. Both ended with injuries of injuries. The list also includes the member of the Hall of Fame Craig Biggiowho had 24-0 for the Houston Astros in 1995. It was fine: he hit .302/.406/.483 that season, was chosen for the All-Star team and ended tenth in the vote to the MVP. JD Drew He started 25-0 in five games with Los Angeles Dodgers in 2005; He hit .286/.412/.520, although an injury limited him to 72 games.

But none of those batters struck out as frequently as devers.

So let’s focus on the strikeouts and we expand our search to most chocolates in the first 15 games of a season. Given its already total astronomical, it is likely that Devers occupy a prominent place on that list, even if you start making more contacts. A total of 17 players struck at least 25 times in 15 games, headed by Yoan Moncada and Miguel Sanó, with 29, both in 2018. It is not surprising that all these seasons have been since 2006 and 12 since 2018.

How did that group go?

Actually, it went well, with an average OPS of .767 and 20 homers. The best of the group was Matt Olson in 2023, which struck 25 times in 15 games, but also hit well with a .317/.423/.650 line. He hit 53 homers. The next best season is Giancarlo Stanton in 2018, his first with the Yankees. He ended with 38 homers and an OPS of .852, but it was a great fall with respect to its MVP season in 2017, when it connected 59 homers. Its strikeout rate increased from 23.6 percent in 2017 to 29.9 percent, and has never been so good.

In fact, that is the worrying thing for Devers: of the 16 players who played the previous season (Trevor Story was a rookie in 2016 when he stuck 25 times in 15 games, although with eight homers), 13 had a higher PAHO the previous season, many significantly.

As Cora argued on Monday, it is a small sample. “You know, this happens in July or August, we wouldn’t even be talking about it,” he said.

That doesn’t sound very sincere. A Slump, even a five -game Slump, with so many strikeouts would undoubtedly be a discussion issue. Even so, that is all that Red Sox and Devers have to say right now: they are just a few games, nothing that a great game cannot fix. They just expect it to arrive soon.
