John McEnroe, tennis legend and former world number 1: “The United States must study what is happening in Spain”

The American tennis player John McEnroewinner of seven Grand Slams and 77 individual titles during his professional career, declared this Thursday that his country must “study what is happening in Spain“and praised the talent of Carlos Alcaraz and Rafa Jodarto whom he advised to try to “follow” the steps of Rafa Nadal.

McEnroe, 67, is a world tennis legend. He won four times US Open, three Wimbledon and was a finalist for Roland Garrosreaching eleven Grand Slam finals and nineteen semifinals at the individual level.

The former American tennis player, traveling in Spain, served as captain of the first Inclusive Masters of the Sanitas Foundation in Madrid next to Argentina Gabriela Sabatini and gave his opinion on the current level of play of Spanish tennis players.

“Rafa Jodar He’s fine, he just needs a little rest. It has had a very rapid progression and we will see what happens in the coming years. In general, Spanish tennis is in an excellent moment. Spain has a very great history of tennis and has always produced great players,” said McEnroe, during his presence at the tournament held in the Magic Box from Madrid.

“Carlos Alcaraz He is a very good player, very complete, and Jódar is also playing very well now. “In America we have to study what is happening in Spain a little more carefully because before they had Rafa Nadal, now they had Carlos Alcaraz and Rafa Jódar and we need better players,” he noted.

“We all hope that after Nadal’s time, Alcaraz has good luck with injuries and will be available for the next ten years. It would be incredible. And Rafa Jódar has a lot to live for. I say the same as Carlos. Both of them should try to follow in Rafa Nadal’s footsteps,” said McEnroe, who gave his point of view about the Davis Cup in Bologna.

“If Carlos Alcaraz plays in the final phase of the Davis Cup, Spain would be a favorite for the title,” he noted.
