Medvedev beats Rublev to win the title in Hangzhou

Daniil Medvedev won the final of the ATP 250 tournament in Hangzhou (China)which is played on a hard court, against his compatriot Andrey Rublev 7-5, 6-4, in what is the world number 6’s third trophy this season.

He succeeds Kazakh Alexander Bublik in the list of winnerswho added the title in the 2025 edition after beating Frenchman Valentin Royer in the final. Medvedev is the third tournament winner to join the circuit in 2024.

For the Russian, it is the twenty-fourth ATP title of his career, the eleventh in the 250 category. It is also the third Open title he has won in 2026, after those in Brisbane (against Brandon Nakashima) and Dubai (against Tallon Griekspoor).

The two Russians arrived with a similar level of fatigue, after having resolved both semifinals this Monday in two sets. Medvedev beat Roman Safiullin, also a Russian, 7-5, 6-4and Rublev dispatched Frenchman Kyrian Jacquet 7-6(0), 6-1.

The precedents between the two favored Medvedev, number 6 in the ATP ranking, who had won seven of the nine confrontations between the compatriots, the last three consecutively.

Medvedev, more aggressive than the rest at the beginning of the match, had three break points distributed between Rublev’s second and third service games. However, he was not able to take advantage of any of them, and his compatriot improved his serve so as not to give up so many options.

Based on games with very short rallies, with very few points, it seemed that the first set would reach a tie break. However, the world number 6 managed to break his compatriot’s serve with 6-5 remaining, and in the next game he closed the set (7-5).

From there, Medvedev took the lead. Rublev began serving the second set, and his rival went up 40-0 at the start, although he needed the three break points to go up 1-0. The world number 6 confirmed the break on his serve, made the score 2-0 and no longer lost the advantage.

With the score at 3-2, Rublev had two breaking points, but Medvedev pulled out all the stops to save his serve and secure the 4-2 lead. Finally, Medvedev closed the second set with 6-4 on the scoreboard on his first match point.
