Alonso: “Shall we touch? No, I didn’t touch. The future? I have to decide, and if I renew, I may continue for many years”
Fernando Alonso He stopped to attend to the Spanish press most frequent in the paddock, among them MD, in the media corral after the Spanish F1 GP held this Sunday in Madring. The Asturian driver gave his point of view on the touch he received from Sainz, which damaged his wing on lap 13, and once again referred to the soap opera of his future.
“We had the displeasure of seeing that you two Spaniards were touching each other,” they asked him.
“I didn’t touch myself, huh”he quickly pointed out.
“Well, they touched you,” said the journalist, before continuing with his question, to ask the Oviedo native for his assessment of what happened.
“Nothing, they threw me against the wall at 340 km/h, when there was all the space on the left. But it’s not the first time either. It is what it is. He received the penalty today, other times he doesn’t receive them, but well, he had a difficult weekend, yesterday with the penalty in the time trial and today at the start he took a car in front of him (it was Tsunoda). And then, me against the wall. It can happen. There are weekends that go a little bit crooked,” said the man from Oviedo.
There was all the space on the left. But it’s not the first time either. It is what it is. He received the penalty today, other times he doesn’t receive them, but hey, he had a difficult weekend
Without rhythm and with the car damaged
“But well, we tried to do our race. Despite that, the pace was what it was. The car was also damaged. But well, I don’t think the position would have changed much. We tried to learn as much as possible in the laps we did,” continued the Asturian, analyzing his race.
“Ahead of us is Bearman. But he’s almost a lap away, 40 seconds ahead. So I don’t think that with the car at full throttle we would have been close to him. And then there’s Tsunoda, Bortoleto. So I think the position is what it is. 17th, there haven’t been as many retirements as perhaps we expected. And well, we have to keep learning. We took advantage of the last few laps to also test different energy modes and all these things that we try to do what’s left of year. But hey, we are not competitive and we have to keep learning,” he concluded.
“Nor if I renew, do I have to take it for another year”
Then, the key question came: “What does it take for you to return here in 2027 and fight for a podium?”
“I need to renew, right? That’s missing. I feel good and I think I have to decide. And if I renew, I don’t have to take it one more year. If I renew, I’ll continue for many years. I’ll stop when I feel slower than the others,” said Fernando. He therefore reiterated what he already said months ago in an exclusive interview in Mundo Deportivo, when he assured that if he renews, it could even be for 3 years: “I don’t know if I will leave F1 this year, in two or three,” he told MD at that time.
“The race has also been physically hard. With all the walls. It was very hot. People in the roadsteads, fans, non-stop. So it has been hard for everyone. Imagine for us inside the cockpit.”
Run in front of your fans
“I have enjoyed it a lot. The truth is that it has been a very special weekend. And today in particular. The parade lap has been nice. The formation lap. The lap now returns to the pit. I put it in first gear and I drove it at 20 km/h. It took me about 5 minutes to reach the parc ferme. Because I wanted to soak up each and every one, the hugs and the emotions that were in the stands. And it has been nice.”
