De Larrea leaves the NBA speechless: 16 points and 12 assists. “An incredible sense of the game”
His name is Sergio de Larrea, Larry the NBA nicknames him with what that name evokes. Of course, the aforementioned historical figure in the collective imagination is in another dimension, but De Larrea has something special, something between him and that ball to which he seems to whisper to tell it exactly where to go when he releases it, an artist who draws alley-oop passes en masse with his silk right hand. Because in the end God raises them and they come together, a player born for the show like the former Manresa player Kaodirich Akobundu-Ehiogu was one of the beneficiaries of those desirable passes from De Larrea.
With that marked author’s signature, the 20-year-old, 1.96-meter point guard amazed with a double-double of 16 points and 12 assists with 3/7 in field goals and 2/5 in triples to lead the Dallas Mavericks to their first victory in this Summer League against the Memphis Grizzlies (96-88).
“He has an amazing sense of the game,” noted Dallas coach Joe Boylan. “He jumped, looked at the corner and threw it to the wing. Some simply incredible passes,” highlighted Boylan, complimenting De Larrea in abundance like alley-oop passes from the former Valencia player, modesty above all.
“My ease with alley-oop assists? I think that both Kao, who I know from the ACB, and the rest of the players, are very easy to jump over the rim. And really my job is simple, is to put it up and they are going to catch it,” De Larrea highlighted.
“I am very happy with the work we are doing this week and with the connection we are having with the greats and with everyone in general to have that type of shots,” added the Valladolid native, whose life makes life easier to have up to three Spanish teammates in Dallas: Santi Aldama – who is not playing but is with the team -, and the Díaz Graham twins, Jorge and Guillermo.
Jorge also excelled with a double-double, in his case 11 points and 10 rebounds with 4/10 in field goals and 2/6 in triples plus 1 assist, 2 steals and 1 block. For his part, Guillermo had 2 rebounds in the 3 minutes he played.
De Larrea gives free rein to his imagination to make those passes like an ace up his sleeve, but the point guard’s free creativity is also supported by the meticulous mathematical approach to basketball, a student whose dedication impresses his coach.
“Last night he sent me videos of how to attack that defense that Memphis does. He is a student of the game, and I think part of it is innate, he has great ease and sense of the game,” Joe Boylan highlighted.
Memphis rushed De Larrea with its full-court pressure and the point guard responded with a vertigo that emanates from his calmness.
“Sergio is very calm,” Jorge Díaz Graham highlighted. “You never see him rushing, you always see good reads from him and it is a pleasure to play with him on the court because he always makes the right reads and the right plays for us,” highlighted the Canary Islander.
