Kasper Schmeichel announces his retirement
The Danish goalkeeper Glasgow Celtic, Kasper Schmeichel39, announced his retirement on Wednesday after suffering a serious shoulder injury. “When my contract with Celtic ends in June, I will end my career as a professional footballer,” he told Danish television channel TV2. “I made this decision after consulting with several surgeons, shoulder specialists, who explained to me that I should not have the possibility of playing at the highest level again,” he added.
The former Nice player (2022-2023) aggravated an injury suffered with the Danish national team last year during a Europa League qualifying match against Stuttgart in February. “It’s not pleasant, it’s not at all how I would have liked my career to end. But, on the other hand, everything has an end,” he concluded.
Leicester City goalkeeper from 2011 to 2022, Kasper Schmeichel was part of the Foxes’ incredible run to the historic Premier League title in 2016, before lifting the FA Cup against Chelsea five years later. After brief spells at Nice and then Anderlecht, he played for Celtic since 2024. Son of Peter Schmeichel, the legendary former Manchester United goalkeeper with whom he was often compared, he trained at Manchester City, Celtic’s rival, and made 120 appearances for the Danish national team.
