Another reinforcement for the All Blacks? The player who would return to New Zealand for the 2027 Rugby World Cup
The All Blacks could add a key piece to the Rugby World Cup 2027: according to recent reports, Shannon Frizell I would be considering returning to New Zealand to relaunch his international career.
The third row, who played 33 tests with the New Zealand team, would plan to return to Highlanders in 2027 with the aim of once again being considered for the national team. Frizell played until the 2023 World Cup final against the Springboksbut he did not wear the black shirt again after leaving for Toshiba Brave Lupus from Japan.
Since his departure, the number 6 position has been a mystery in the All Blacks. Simon Parker closed the last year as a starter, while Wallace Sititi had an outstanding emergence in 2024. Even Tupou Vaa’i was used in some sections, evidencing the lack of a clear owner in that role.
The possible return of Frizell is part of an active repatriation policy by New Zealand Rugby. In fact, he has already achieved the return of Richie Mo’unga for next year, and the new coach of the team, Dave Renniealso expressed his interest in recovering the experienced second line Brodie Retallickcurrently with Kobelco Steelers.
At 32 years old, Frizell comes from being a protagonist in Japan, where he won titles with Toshiba Brave Lupus in 2024 and 2025 alongside Mo’unga himself. However, an injury sidelined him for much of the current season.
Thus, his possible return would not only reinforce a key position, but would also add experience and hierarchy to some All Blacks who face a new stage towards Australia 2027after the departure of Scott Robertson.
