Pirates call up No. 1 prospect Konnor Griffin for home opener
Baseball’s No. 1 prospect, 19-year-old shortstop Konnors Griffin, was called up by the Pirates for the team’s first game in Pittsburgh.
The Pittsburgh Pirates have called up shortstop Konnor Griffin – baseball’s No. 1 prospect – ahead of Friday’s home opener against the Baltimore Orioles, it was announced Thursday.
If Griffin remains with the team for the remainder of the season, the Pirates could be eligible to receive an additional draft pick through the Prospect Promotion Incentive.
Griffin, who will turn 20 on April 24, was the ninth overall pick in the 2024 draft. During his time in the minor leagues last year, the 6-foot-3, 222-pound shortstop hit .333, posting a .941 OPS. He had standout performances during spring training this year, hitting four home runs in 16 games.
He began this season in the Triple-A category with the Indianapolis team, where he has had seven hits in his first 16 at-bats, in addition to three stolen bases.
Sources told AM850’s Buster Olney on Wednesday that the Pirates are in an advanced stage of negotiations with Griffin to sign a long-term contract.
