Abril Herrero and a story of improvement
Abril Herrero is a player from Club San Marcos who is playing her first year at the Superior Squad. The southern club is the club of his entire life, and although he started hockey due to a neurological problem, today he really enjoys the field, sharing with references and having his mother on the other side.
“The first time I played in First Division it was impressive pressure, my teammates helped me get over those nerves”said the young woman. He currently shares the court with Magalí Fajardo, a member of the club’s history -sister of Juana Fajardo de Lomas-, and coaches his daughter in youth who said about Abril: “She is a player who from day one that she trained with us, that she played with us, you don’t realize that she never went through that stage of being smaller or feeling pressure. She always fit in, she never has a bad day, she always plays the same, she is always involved, she is never afraid of anything, she goes to the front in every game.”
Something that her mother, Alicia, also commented on, who accompanies her whenever she can, and on Saturday she went to Benavídez to watch her daughter play. They have been part of the club for 13 years, and we are proud of everything Abril achieved. “She overcame a lot of things that were impossible for them. She never gives up, she has impressive willpower and if they tell her: ‘You’re not going to be able to do this’ it’s like giving her that energy or that injection that she needs to do even the impossible to be able to do it.”Alicia remarked.
April had seizures since she was born, and had a life expectancy of two years. The neurologist told the mother that playing hockey was something that could help her because both hemispheres work together, moving arms and legs simultaneously. That’s how two friends, Luli and Valen, invited her to play when she was three years old. In 2016 he was discharged permanently and today he is out of danger. If there is one thing Alicia wants today and always, it is for her daughter to never give up.
Today, Abril enjoys playing with friends in the First Division of the San Marcos club, but her story could have been very different if it weren’t for her friends who invited her to play hockey. Sharing with references like Maga and having a team and a mother who always supports her, she has already won. Crowning this year with San Marcos would be an addition to everything he has been experiencing since he was three years old, and with the mentality he has, one can only hope that he will achieve everything he sets his mind to.
