25 years after Lucha Aymar was chosen for the first time as the best player in the world
On a day like today -March 6-, but in 2001, Luciana Paula Aymar won the “Best Player of the Year” award given by the International Hockey Federation. It was the first (but not the last) time in her career that she won this award from the FIH, an entity that nominated her 12 times – 11 of them consecutively.
The Rosario came from being part of the generation that changed the history of Argentine hockey: Las Leonas de Sydney 2000. After obtaining the trophy, Lucha managed to win the same recognition on seven (yes, seven) more occasions: 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2013.
This last year was at an excellent hockey level but at the same time at the twilight of her career, because a year later -2014- and after winning the Champions Trophy with Las Leonas, Aymar would put an end to her professional career as a player. The best hockey player in history, a legend of Argentine and world sports.
