After his experiences, Joao Fonseca marked clear differences between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz
After falling before Carlos Alcaraz at the Miami Masters 1000, Joao Fonseca He shared his impressions about what differentiates the Spaniard from Jannik Sinner, whom he had faced shortly before in Indian Wells.
The Brazilian youth player described the Italian as a player roboticcapable of consistently hitting the ball with perfect power and precision. On the other hand, he pointed out that Alcaraz has a much broader repertoire that is difficult to decipher. “The biggest challenge against Alcaraz is that you never know what he’s going to do, because he has a whole arsenal of shots. You have to play perfect tennis, and I missed the opportunities I had. I think that’s what made the difference.”
According to Fonseca, the biggest challenge of facing the Murcian is his unpredictability, since he dominates all registers: from topspin and brute force to climbs to the net and changes of pace. This versatility, coupled with exceptional mobility, makes it almost impossible to anticipate his next move.
“Playing against both of them helped me understand their different styles of play. I think Alcaraz has a broader repertoire of blows. Jannik is like a robot; he just hits the ball hard and does everything perfectly. Carlos, on the other hand, can do absolutely everything on the court. You can print effect to the ball, hit it very hard, go up to the net, change the rhythm. His movement is spectacular and it is difficult to understand his game,” the Brazilian continued.
For Fonseca, these defeats against the best in the world are fundamental lessons to identify his mistakes and continue evolving on the circuit. About the match he specifically said: “As the match progressed, I felt that he relaxed and found his rhythm on the court. At first, he played with some pressure, but getting a break of serve at the beginning of each set raised his level. I went out on the court convinced that I could win after what happened with Sinner in Indian Wells, but I didn’t take advantage of my opportunities and he played a great game. It’s No. 1. I need to reflect on my mistakes and learn from them.”
