30 years since her debut in Indian Wells: Venus Williams returns to a tournament she knew how to boycott

Unlike the men’s tournament, the women’s tournament is the third WTA 1000 of the season after those in Doha and Dubai, won, respectively, by the Czech Karolina Muchova and the American Jessica Pegula. The big attraction will be seeing Venus Williams, who was invited to the tournament for the thirtieth edition since her debut in 1997.

In 2018, Venus took a 6-3, 6-4 victory in a tournament in which she reached the semifinals, her best result being in California.

For three decades, Compton competed for what will go down in history not only as a member of the Hall of Fame who dominated the sport for long periods, but as a continuous source of perseverance in both singles and doubles, where she reached Grand Slam finals with her sister.

In the first match she will face a classified player and if she advances her second match will be against Madison Keys, fifteenth seeded. The statistics print on paper 49 individual titles at the professional level, a number 1 ranking in the world both alone and in doubles and a total of 23 Grand Slam titles in all competitions, including seven as a singles player.
