Zverev leaves doubts behind and sees number one as “a goal”
Alexander Zverevnumber two in the world, stated this Wednesday in Beijing that reaching the top of the rankings is “a goal”after a season in which his titles at Roland Garros and the United States Open dispelled his doubts about whether he would be able to win a Grand Slam.
The top seed at the China Open acknowledged in his pre-tournament press conference that he is mindful of the fight for number one and was pleased to participate in a dispute that, according to him, at the beginning of the year expected to focus on Carlos Alcaraz (n.3) and Jannik Sinner (n.1).
He insisted, however, on concentrating on his preparation and performance on the track, the aspects he can control, and letting the other factors take their course.
With 56 victories, the German leads the circuit in a season marked by his first two Grand Slam titles.
Before winning Roland Garros at the age of 29, he explained, he still wondered if he would ever win a major.
“Those doubts are no longer“, he said when describing how that victory changed his way of facing the following opportunities.
While in Paris he felt stress and nerves, he assured that in New York he enjoyed the competition more and playing in the final, with the confidence of knowing that he could win again.
He also highlighted that He and his team decided to modify the way they play this seasona bet that he considers beneficial and on which he will continue working, although he did not specify the adjustments.
Zverev arrived in Beijing on Tuesday and will debut this Thursday at the National Tennis Center in Beijing in the first round against the British Cameron Norrie (n.40).
