WNBA Power Rankings: Faver and Mystics upload, Lynx is still number 1

WNBA Power Rankings: Faver and Mystics upload, Lynx is still number 1

Indiana’s offensive is heating as more teams go up and fall in our final edition of the first half.

The Minnesota Lynx have remained at number 1 of the Power Ranking of the AM850 WNBA from the first weekend of matches in May. This week is the time they have been losing their post.

Minnesota, of course, continues comfortably at the top of the WNBA classification. But as our classification is based more on the weekly temperature of the WNBA teams, Lynx needed Monday’s victory for 91-78 over the Chicago Sky to stay.

That completed his week with a record of 2-2, surpassing the Phoenix Mercury, who on the rise, gave them one of their defeats. The Mercury beat Lynx by 79-71 last Wednesday and then achieved a 78-77 victory in Golden State on Monday.

For now, Minnesota remains at the top. That could change next week depending on Wednesday’s confrontation in Minneapolis, when the Mercury visit Lynx. That will be the last game for both teams before the recess of the stars game.

Phoenix will try to provide Minnesota for his first 2025 house defeat, not counting the defeat of the Lynx in the commissioner’s Cup against the Indiana Fever on July 1. This does not count on the classification, where Minnesota has a 11-0 record at home and maintains an advantage of three games about Phoenix to Monday’s matches. However, the Lynx know that Indiana demonstrated some vulnerability in the Target Center and hope to prevent that from happening again. And keep Mercury firmly in second place.

It is difficult to establish a similar connection between the defeats of Minnesota last week against Phoenix and Chicago. The Lynx did not live up to the attack against the Mercury, and their defense was not so precise against the Sky in Saturday’s defeat by 87-81. But in both cases, they recovered with victories. They defeated Los Angeles for 91-82 the day after losing to Phoenix, and in the rematch in Chicago on Monday they controlled the game much better. The remarkable free kick by Napheesa Collier, a favorite to the MVP, continued on Monday: he led 11 of 11 free throws and has 95.4% (104 of 109) in the season. He also scored four triples, his best personal brand, in Monday’s game

The Mercury signed Dewanna Bonner last week after being fired by Indiana in June, and joined the team on Wednesday against Minnesota. He is already doing fruits for Phoenix: Bonner scored 7 points and captured 6 rebounds in the victory against Lynx, and then led Las Mercury with 22 points and 11 rebounds in Monday’s victory over Golden State. Now imagine Phoenix when Satou Sabally and Kahleah Copper are completely recovered.

The defending champions got a couple of victories that promoted them, defeating the ACES for 87-78 on Tuesday and then tracing a 19-point disadvantage to overcome the Dream by 79-72 on Sunday. The defense that promoted the comeback against the Dream was a gratifying show for the Liberty, as well as the 36 points, 13 rebounds and 6 assists that the forward Leonie Febich added between both victories.

After a defeat by 80-61 against Golden State last Wednesday with an attack that seemed to be full of impostors, the Faver beat the Dream (99-82) and then to the Wings (102-83). The best version of Indiana’s attack was reflected in both victories, with Kelsey Mitchell scoring 45 points and Caitlin Clark distributing 22 assists. The Faver will seek to keep the impulse with two consecutive games on the east coast before returning home to house the game of the stars on Saturday.

The Mystics had a great week with their second streak of three consecutive victories of the season. All were very close encounters: Washington beat Chicago and Las Vegas for two points, and then Seattle for five. The Brittney Sykes base added 48 points in the victories, while the Wedding Eaved All-Star Kiki Iriafen (8.5 rebounds per game) continued to be the best of the mystics under the glass.

The Dream is going through a bad time. They have lost five of their last seven games, falling 99-82 against Indiana and 79-72 against New York last week. On Monday, they learned that the All-Star Rhyne Howard, second of the team in annotations and assists, will miss the rest of July due to a knee injury.

A positive point is that Jordin Canada averages 17.2 points and 7.2 assists in his last five games.

The Valkyries were close to a week of 3-0, which would have placed them among the 4 best of the Power Ranking. But after an 80-61 victory in Indiana on Wednesday (his second victory this season against the Faver), they lost two games for a single possession. 104-102 fell in Las Vegas on Saturday and 78-77 at home against Phoenix on Monday. Natalie Nakase could be in her first season as the main coach of the WNBA, but she seemed a veteran when she was irritated with the arbitration that she sent to Alyssa Thomas de las Mercury to the line with 1 second for playing for what turned out to be the winning free kick. Even so, Golden State has shown that he can compete with anyone in the League.

Are we already dominated the Storm? No, while they keep up and down in the Power Ranking. Last week they lost 93-83 against the last classified, Connecticut, beat Sun 79-65 at home and then lost 74-69 against Washington at home. The Mystics surpassed the storm 27-14 in the last quarter.

However, some good news for Seattle: the veteran Base Tiffany Mitchell has provided an impulse since he joined the team after being fired by Las Vegas on June 30.

The star of Las Aces, A’ja Wilson, was injured the right wrist (not the one he uses to throw) in the defeat by 87-78 against New York last Tuesday, and the defeat of Las Vegas was lost by 70-68 against Washington on Thursday. However, the three-time MVP returned on Saturday, with 34 points and 16 rebounds in the 104-102 victory over Golden State. Jackie Young also scored 30 points against the Valkyries in the game with the greatest scoring of ACES this season.

Chicago had a 2-2 record in a busy week, with victories about Dallas and Minnesota, and losses against Washington and Minnesota. Ariel Atkins suffered a leg injury in the first half of Monday’s defeat against Lynx and did not return. Sky cannot afford to lose more experience in the base position, so it would be expensive if considerable time is lost.

The angels have not yet won two games in a row, losing against Minnesota for 91-82 and then defeating Connecticut for 92-88 last week. But three sparks are playing well: the All-Star Kelsey Plum, Dearica Hamboy and Azura Stevens, and their attack has been decent (82.5 points per game). Now the question is whether they can ascend in the classification improving their defense after allowing 87.2 points per game in the first half of the season, the second largest amount of the League.

Dallas fell 87-76 against Chicago and then 102-83 against Indiana in two discouraging games last week. Arike Ogunbowale returned from a thumb injury against the FAVER, but stayed with 0 of 10 in field shots. And it is obvious that the pivot Teaira McCowan does not fit into the system of coach Chris Koclanes, who is in his first year: after averaging more than ten points in each of his first six seasons in the WNBA, now averages 5.6 points and plays only 14.1 minutes per game, both minimums of his career.

Sun has not had much to celebrate in 2025, but won his first victory since the beginning of June last Wednesday, defeating the Storm for 93-83 before continuing the victory with losses against Seattle and Los Angeles.

An outstanding point of the season has been Tina Charles, who, at 36 and in her fourteenth season at the WNBA, leads the SUN score (15.4 points per game). In the victory over Seattle, he registered his best brands of the season with 29 points and 11 rebounds.
