It’s getting closer and closer until Stan Wawrinka (98th in the world ranking) retires from professional tennis: announced that he will stop competing at the end of the current 2026 season. For now, the Swiss, three-time Grand Slam champion, will be present in the main draw of the Monte-Carlo Masters 1000. There, he will make his debut against the Argentine Sebastián Báez (50th). Whoever wins will collide with Carlos Alcaraz (1st).

Just in the last few hours, Wawrinka gave statements to the press about his next competition and one of them was for the current world number 1: “I have already mentioned that I dream of facing Alcaraz. I am a born competitor, while I am active I go out to each match wanting to win and believing that I can do it. “I will always demand the most from myself, that is what has led me to achieve great success and continue playing today.”

Then he added: “It would be magical to face Carlos here. I consider that he is taking tennis to another dimension, what he does on the court is exceptional.. They have completely changed this sport. Everything has become more physical and homogeneous between surfaces. “It is difficult to introduce tactical variations in today’s tennis.”

Finally, he referred to the last two Masters 1000, in Indian Wells and Miami, in which he did not receive wild cards: “I did not request an invitation because making long trips after so many years on the circuit is not easy. I felt that if I wanted to complete an entire year competing, I had to preserve my physique and my mind.”
