Wawrinka receives an invitation to play the US Open at 41 years old

The Swiss Stan Wawrinka, winner of three Grand Slam titles, received this Wednesday a wild card to play in the United States Open at the age of 41, a tournament he won in 2016.

“I am incredibly excited to accept the invitation to the 2026 US Open and look forward to competing again in front of fans in New York,” the tennis player said in a statement shared by the organization.

It will be the last ‘Grand Slam’ for Wawrinka, who will retire at the end of the current season.

The Swiss had not initially been invited to this edition despite having lifted the trophy in 2016, when he defeated Serbian Novak Djokovic in the final. The organization issued him the ‘wild card’ after the injury of one of the original winners.

Wawrinka will meet his opponent in the first round this Thursday, when the draw is drawn.

The Swiss was for years one of the main alternatives to the ‘Big Three’ of Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nada, and reached world number 3 in 2014.

In addition to the United States Open, it also has an Australian Open (2014) and a Roland Garros (2015) in its showcases.

The main draws of the New York tournament will be played between August 30 and September 13.
