UEFA gives Infantino an ultimatum
UEFA, European football’s governing body, has told FIFA that it must make public key documents and respond to all questions relating to its governance and decision-making processes by 2 November.
During the FIFA Council meeting held on Thursday, FIFA President, Gianni Infantino, He apologized for his failed plan to sell the World Cup rights, but did not offer a detailed explanation of how the proposal came about, as UEFA had requested.
Information and documentation not provided
In a letter to which BBC Sport has had access, the UEFA general secretary, Theodore Theodoridis, pointed out that the highest body of world football has not addressed “a series of fundamental questions.” “Others remain unanswered and the requested information and documentation have not been provided,” follow the text.
The letter includes eight pages of questions covering various topics: from private investment in the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) program to privatizing the World Cup and the FIFA Peace Prize awarded to donald trump until the controversial sanction that was suspended – to the American striker Folarin Balogun during the 2026 World Cup despite being sent off in the previous match.
Among the 42 questions are also related to matters such as an additional payment to Infantino, which does not appear in the financial report, as well as his accommodation expenses in Qatar and the United States, those of a rental in the Trump tower or the impartiality of the president of the Electoral Commission.
‘“The withdrawal of the FFE, the recognition of errors and the announcement of ‘possible governance reforms’ do not explain how the relevant decisions were made or why the FIFA Council was not involved at the appropriate stage,” adds the document.
“Immediate response”
“Any refusal to disclose information or documents must be justified individually, clearly stating the specific reasons on which it is based,” argues UEFA.
“These questions require an immediate answer. They cannot be postponed until the next meeting of the FIFA Council; “Likewise, future governance reforms cannot replace scrutiny of, and accountability for, decisions already made.” holds the text..
UEFA does not specify what measures it will take if FIFA does not meet the deadline after these issues were already raised with Infantino during the FIFA Council meeting last week.
Debbie Hewitt president of the English Football Association and vice-president of FIFA, later stated: ““If you don’t answer those questions, you are not qualified to be president of FIFA.”
