Thomas Silva signed with XDS Astana and achieved a milestone for Uruguayan cycling
Uruguayan Thomas Silva, former Caja Rural-Seguros RGA cyclist, will compete next season in the World Tour with the XDS Astana teamwith whom he has signed for two years, until 2027, as reported this Monday by his new squad.
Thomas Silva, 23 years old and current Uruguayan national champion, is the first athlete from this country to compete in the World Tour, the highest level of international cycling.
In the 2025 season he won the mountain classification of the Vuelta a Andalucía, a stage of the Tour of Lake Qinghai, where he also finished second overall, and a stage of the Gran Premio Internacional Beiras e Serra da Estrela. He also finished fourth in the Miguel Indurain Grand Prix and the Grand Prix du Morbihan.
“I am very happy and inspired by the opportunity to take a big step in the World Tour with a team as prestigious and historic as the XDS Astana Team. I’m looking forward to joining the team, looking forward to the new season, and my motivation is at the highest level! There is a lot of work ahead, but I am willing to give everything to continue improving as a professional cyclist,” said Thomas Silva after signing for his new team.
For Alexandr Vinokurov, general director of the XDS Astana team, the Uruguayan cyclist has grown “significantly in recent years and his progress at a pro-continental level has been very notable, so his move to the World Tour was just a matter of time.”
“I am glad that we have reached an agreement with the management of Caja Rural–Seguros RGA and have been able to make this transition before the 2026 season. I believe that in our team, Thomas will have everything he needs to continue the momentum he has built over the last two seasons,” he assured.
