Carlos Alcaraz starred in an image that, as the hours passed, would be worrying. It’s that at the premiere before Otto Virtanenthe world number two requested medical assistance in the first set due to an injury to his right wrist. A problem that ended up forcing him to retire and leave the Barcelona Open.

When the Spaniard went 5-4 up in the opening set, he trotted to his bench and immediately asked for a physio to be present. The problem was in the wrist of his right arm, which took a few minutes of attention.

According to what the cameras were able to see and hear, Alcaraz said: “I can play well, it’s a bother”. However, the former world No. 1 did not relax and neither did his medical assistant, who bandaged the affected area.

In statements hours later, at the press conference he gave, Alcaraz express: “In yesterday’s game I felt pain in my wrist that gradually got worse. It’s a situation that I thought wouldn’t get worse, but given the evidence it’s a more serious injury than expected.”
