The NBA publishes its first classification of favorites for the MVP 26/27

The NBA has published its first weekly ranking of outstanding players for the 2026-27 season, mainly reflecting already established figures in the league, although with some surprises in the race for the MVP. Despite it being the start of the campaign, positioning for the league’s most coveted individual award has already begun. Statistics are crucial, with players who lead in scoring, rebounds, assists or blocks receiving consideration. Those who excel in multiple categories get deeper evaluation. These are the ones listed in order so far:

1. Luka Doncic (Los Angeles Lakers)

He leads the standings thanks to a historic scoring start (38.5 points per game) and for becoming the first player with six consecutive games of at least 35 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 triples. With displays of up to 52 points and a visible commitment in defense, Doncic will maintain the lead while the Lakers keep winning.

2. Victor Wembanyama (San Antonio Spurs)

He occupies second place boosted by a colossal performance of 52 points, 24 rebounds and 8 blocks against Dallas. Having left behind doubts about his offensive efficiency at the beginning of the season, the French center once again dominates with ease on both sides of the court.

3. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (Oklahoma City Thunder)

The two-time award winner is seeking his third consecutive MVP while supporting a Thunder hampered by injuries to Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams. He averages over 30 points a night and continues to successfully shoulder a monumental responsibility on his team.

4. Tyrese Maxey (Philadelphia 76ers)

He has established himself as Philadelphia’s offensive reference with the full support of his new teammates, LeBron James and Jaylen Brown. In addition to his 28 points on average, he stands out in the recovery aspect and performs at a high level in defense, being the great key to the positive start of his franchise.

5. Jayson Tatum (Boston Celtics)

He has dispelled fears after his recent Achilles tendon injury and assumed absolute leadership of Boston after the departure of Jaylen Brown. Responding with 27 points and almost 8 assists per game, Tatum has already earned recognition as Eastern Player of the Week.

The rest of the Top 10 is completed by Alperen Sengun (6th, Rockets), who is close to a triple-double on average; a veteran and fearsome Stephen Curry (7th, Warriors); Giannis Antetokounmpo (8th, Heat), performing at his usual level in his new stage in Miami; the young Cooper figure flagg (9th, Mavericks); and three-time winner Nikola Jokic (10th, Nuggets), penalized for the moment by Denver’s slow start.
