The Lakers are a mirage; Doncic bets on it being reality

Luka Doncic pushes to prevent the Lakers from leaving the current NBA season unnoticed.

The Lakers will be eliminated in first round of playoffs. This is what has been repeated in the halls of the NBA for months. The change of franchise owner, the epilogue of LeBron James the lack of commitment Deandre Aytondefensive problems. The conclusions, for JJ Redick’s team, have been dogmatic.

However, during March, a basketball genius pushes with his big-drop talent, with his slow-motion game and recurring genius, to convince us otherwise. We are talking, of course, about Luka Doncic.

The loss of the Lakers against the Pistons, in the last possession, ended a streak of nine wins in a row for the Angelenos that took them to third place in the Western Conference. Doncic, Hollywood’s own child God, had the last shot in his hands. Forced, with a mark on him, he narrowly fell short. Luka carries in these Lakers a via crucis similar to the one he experienced with Dallas Mavericks in 2024, when he led the franchise to compete in the NBA Finals.

Beyond his physical appearance, Doncic’s stitches fall out of his hands. He makes them how he wants. He does them as best he can. He is currently the best offensive player in the entire league and although he is not a candidate to win the MVP, he will arrive in April in full condition. It’s your team. He knows it, Redick knows it, LeBron knows it. Everyone knows it.

Doncic is pushing the rest to do the extra that is needed to compete. LeBron, at 41 years old, is doing an extraordinary job as the second sword. Austin Reavessometimes needing to be first, now occupies his role as third musketeer. And Ayton, accustomed to navigating Babia with his mind throughout the games, began to understand in the outcome of the regular series what is required of him. Timely defense in the paint and accompany the offense with logical shots near the rim.

Luke Kennard has given the Lakers a presence similar to that of Alex Caruso in the bubble. He is a much more reliable shooter and is less sacrificial, but he is neat, committed and is paying off with his distance shots. AND Marcus Smart Today it looks much more like its Celtics version than the most recent Grizzlies. It is as if everything, in a short time, had fallen into place based on an idea.

The Lakers have a record of 22-7 in games decided in the clutch. They have experience, but they also suffer from wear and tear. LeBron is extraordinary, but time is time. And Doncic is 27 years old, but beyond being a strong player, he reaches the end highly demanded by the defensive pressure that any rival on duty applies to him.

Against the Pistons, LA rallied from a 16-point deficit. Without Smart ni Rui Hachimura -It’s true, the Pistons without their star Cade Cunningham– They managed to get closer despite suffering with the effectiveness of their shots against one of the best defenses in the competition.

So is this team a mirage or a reality? Doncic is something like a salesman from the future who shows, with his arts, what the purple and gold franchise can be in its future. Look at a mirror and surrender to joy or sadness. It is up to each of us to believe. The Slovenian, in short, confuses with his genius: he hides impurities and highlights virtues. He convinces others, pushes them and seduces them. Positions a previously destroyed team into one that can compete.

These Lakers are not a championship team. In fact, no one can guarantee that they can overcome a first seven-game playoff series. Due to wear and tear, due to squad depth, due to sustained vices from previous times.

Doncic, however, opens the cloth and displays the chips. As in Dallas in 2024, he is going strong for another sporting miracle. Conquering it or not is the end, but what is important here is the will of the path: the challenge of not giving up and trying. Maybe it won’t be in 2026. Maybe we’ll have to wait a little longer. But with free agency hot after the month of June, everything we see today as an introduction can, in a not so important time, translate into middle and end.

It will be a matter of getting the necessary parts to go with it. And then yes, the joys that appear fleeting and extraordinary can become, once and for all, recurring and regular.
