Nick Mallett, former coach of the Springboks, appeared on the Talking Boks podcast: he defended Los Pumas in the midst of the controversy generated by the refereeing decisions at Twickenham and also praised the team led by Felipe Contepomi, where he pointed out that Argentina’s excellent aerial game was one of the main reasons for their great improvement on the last date of Rugby Championship.
“It’s interesting how much they improved, because in Durban we really dominated the aerial competition. A lot of our momentum came from those high kicks, which were recovered by Ethan Hooker and by Cheslin Kolbe and by Canan Moodie. They were all outstanding in the air, but in this game the roles changed. I thought they were exceptional.”Mallett said.
Then, the former coach continued: “They got ahead of us a couple of times, our guy, our jumper. They just got into space quicker. And I think that made a big difference in the outcome, because winning an unstructured, aerial game, a kick, which you do, and you win that kick, it’s an unstructured game. They’re not in a position to defend. You have 15 guys behind the ball, and they only have seven, hopefully, maybe five, that can get behind it. So if you win that ball quickly, you are in an excellent position to attack”.
“They have improved one hundred percent, but I think we have to realize that last week we were better than them, and this week they have been better than us”Mallett closed.
