The FIA ​​announces changes to the Formula 1 regulations for 2027 and 2028

The FIA announced this Wednesday a package of measures with which it will incorporate changes in the Technical, Sports and Financial Regulations of the Formula 1 facing the seasons 2027 and 2028 and which includes, among other things, developments in energy management within the framework of the new system of power units.

According to a statement published on its website, the governing body of Formula 1 reached a agreement with Formula One Management, the teams and the factories to enter modifications to energy management and fuel energy flow characteristicsresponding to the demands and concerns that both the drivers and their teams have been expressing since the start of this campaign.

In this sense, the new package introduces a “gradual rebalancing” with specific adjustments to the power of internal combustion engines, which increases from the current 400 kW to 420 kW in 2027 and 450 kW in 2028, the fuel energy flow (increasing by 5% in 2027 and 13% in 2028) and the deployment of energy recovery systems, in addition to greater flexibility in energy management.

It also incorporates support measures related to the supply conditions of the power unit, racing operations and relevant financial regulations.

“The 2026 Formula 1 regulations were developed and agreed in close collaboration between the FIA, FOM, teams, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and power unit manufacturers. These latest amendments reflect the continuity of this collaboration, with all stakeholders working together to refine the regulatory framework and address identified operational challenges,” declared the FIA.

The FIA ​​will now streamline the formal approval process to provide all parties with clarity from the outset and sufficient time to adapt to the revised requirements, so that the proposed changes will be submitted to the World Motor Sport Council for approval. on June 23 in Macau.
