Swiss junior Muriel Furrer dies after falling in the World Cup road race

The Swiss junior cyclist Muriel Furrer, 18, died this Friday after failing to overcome the consequences of a serious head injury that occurred in a fall during the road event of the Zurich 2024 Cycling and Paracycling World Cup.

The UCI has confirmed the death of Furrer after her fall in the junior category race held this Thursday, from which she was evacuated by helicopter to a hospital where she was admitted in critical condition.

“Muriel Furrer unfortunately died today at the University Hospital of Zurich,” the international organization announced.

According to the Swiss Federation on its website, “with Muriel Furrer, the international cycling community has lost an athlete who still had her future ahead of her.”

“The UCI and the UCI Cycling and Road World Championships Organizing Committee express their deepest condolences to the family of Muriel Furrer, her friends and her association Swiss Cycling. The family asks that their privacy be respected during this time difficult,” he concludes.
