The 33 -year -old pillar will end his career having played 83 test match with South Africa, with two world glasses under his arm: the Forward was champion in Japan 2019 and France 2023.
The South African suffered the neck injury playing for the Currie Cup last year and, after undergoing an initial conservative therapy, the decision was made to undergo stabilizing surgery.
After a long rehabilitation process, his neck was significantly reduced and the advice of a specialist neurosurgeon was that if he continued playing he ran a high risk of injuring himself again.
“Playing rugby has been my life from a young age and I have been lucky enough to live the dream of many young people representing the Springboks and the Stormers. Obviously, it is very disappointing that my career ends in this way, but unfortunately the risk for my well -being was too high”said El Pilar.
And closed: “I really wanted to finish my story with Stormers on the pitch and I gave the rehabilitation and the best opportunity I could, but it could not be. As much as I miss playing and the special feeling of going out to represent something much bigger than myself, I am also looking forward to starting a new and exciting chapter in my life,”he concluded.
