Spain consolidates institutional support for its candidacy for the 2035 Rugby World Cup
The Spain’s candidacy to host the 2035 Men’s Rugby XV World Cup continues to take firm steps in its international development.
In this context, a delegation of world rugby headed by Alan GilpinCEO of the international organization, has visited Spain in recent days to hold various institutional and strategic meetings with representatives of the Royal Spanish Rugby Federation.
The World Rugby delegation was made up of Alan Gilpin, CEO of World Rugby; Nicola Alesbrook, Director, Event Planning at World Rugby Events; and Michel Poussau, Chief Revenue Officer.
On behalf of the Royal Spanish Rugby Federation, they have participated Juan Carlos Martinpresident of the RFER and Gabriel Saez, vice president of the Sports Area, Planning and Strategy.
During the visit, both institutions have maintained an intense work agenda with representatives of sports, institutions and the entertainment industry and major events in Spain, with the aim of continuing exploring the opportunities that the country offers to host one of the largest sporting events in the world.
Among the meetings held, the meetings held with the Higher Sports Council and the Minister of Sports stand out, Miracles Toulon; LaLiga and its president Javier Tebas; the Spanish Olympic Committee with its president Alejandro Blanco; institutional representatives of the Community of Madrid and the Government of Andalusia; as well as strategic meetings with Real Madrid and Atlético de Madrid to analyze the potential of infrastructure and venues.
The Spanish candidacy continues to be built under the concept “Bridge the World”, a proposal that aspires to turn the 2035 Rugby World Cup into a country project, capable of connecting territories, cultures and new audiences through sport.
“Spain’s candidacy meets all the conditions to turn this World Cup into a collective success. We have organizational experience, first-class infrastructure and a citizenry that understands sport as a space for meeting, coexistence and shared celebration,” Minister Milagros Tolón has assured.
Juan Carlos Martín, president of the Royal Spanish Rugby Federation, highlighted his gratitude to “Council of Ministers, the Higher Sports Council and all the institutions for the support they are showing us. It is a differential project, good for our country. Rugby is a sport with usable and exportable values not only to the sports community, but to the entire society.”
The Spanish leader also added that “The Rugby World Cup is a very important milestone. A huge event, with a huge impact on the economy. It is for all this that this candidacy is a country project”.
For its part, Alan GilpinCEO of World Rugby, said: “It is a pleasure to be in Spain talking about rugby, and to hear Spain talk about rugby. I want to highlight Spain’s ambition and potential to organize an event of the importance of the Rugby World Cup.”
Gilpin also highlighted “the ambition and human quality of the RFER management team to be able to qualify to host the 2035 World Cup. The candidacy is built with leadership and institutional support for global growth. Thank you to the Minister for her support of a sport like rugby during all this time”.
