Sinner, Wimbledon champion: “It is not a failure not to win a Grand Slam, the strange thing is to win it”
Jannik Sinner renewed the title of Wimbledon champion. The tenth professional player who manages to keep the trophy from one edition to the next. At 24 years old he lifted his fifth Grand Slam trophy. It arrived just after having suffered a considerable setback in Roland Garroswhere he lost a match he won by having a physical ‘bird’ due to the high temperatures.
“I don’t think this new title is a relief,” he said without hesitation, after having beaten the German Alexander Zverev in a grand final, 6-7 (7), 7-6 (2), 6-3 and 6-4. He dedramatized the bad moments, he also praised the good ones at the right point. He valued that “the only thing that makes me very happy is that I try to do my best every day. Sometimes you have a tournament with a good result, and other times not. But there is nothing you can do about it, but work.”
He stressed that “it is not a failure if you do not win a Grand Slam. They are very, very rare days in which you do it. I have already had five in my life. We talk about five Grand Slams, but they are still five days among many others.”
The champion wanted to rest and savor the victory. “I want to enjoy it, it was a very hard day. I didn’t take anything for granted, because I have a lot of respect for Sascha, who is playing an increasingly better game. If I had lost it would have also been a great day, playing in a Grand Slam final is already special. Although I prefer today’s result.”
He warned that Zverev’s level jump after triumphing at Roland Garros helps him try to give more. “The good thing is that you always have someone who pushes you to the limit. Hopefully Carlos (Alcaraz) Come back, because tennis needs you. We have to Novak (Djokovic) still present and the young people who come strong. This is all great. “You have to work hard to have moments like the current one.”
He kept serve intact for four hours, overcoming a single break ball. “It’s focusing on the moment. If you lose serve once, the set is probably over. Especially playing against Sasha. Against the best in the world you have to be careful with the service. I have been improving it in the tournament, as the tournaments went by, like all my tennis in general,” he stated.
He once again had his problems off the track to talk to the Princes of Wales and his two children. “I have a lot of respect for them, you never know where the limit is. You can see that they are passionate about this sport. It was a very brief conversation, the children told me that they were very happy, that they play tennis.”
