Russell, the fastest in a bumpy practice in Australia

Mercedes experienced a session of contrasts in the third free session of the Australian Grand Prix.

Sergio “Checo” Pérez closed the time table in the third free practice of the Australian Grand Prix with a record of 1:24.397, sealing a complicated weekend for the Mexican who is looking for his return to the Formula 1.

The distance from the leader was abysmal. More than five seconds separated the pilot from cadillac of George Russellwho jumped to the top with 1:19.053, seven tenths faster than the previous best time of the weekend.

Checo had indicated after FP2 that he expected “a clean Free Practice 3, because we really need data for classification”, but the reality is that Cadillac continues to navigate turbulent waters.

Friday was chaotic for the Mexican. He only completed two laps in FP2 before a hydraulic leak took him out of circulation, leaving him with no recorded time. Pat Symonds, Cadillac’s technical director, said there were two separate and unrelated complications: first an anomaly in the fuel system that required removal of the battery, and then the hydraulic leak.

Drama in Mercedes marked the session.

Kimi Antonelli He crashed his W17 into the wall in Turn 2, losing traction on the curb, causing a red flag that ruined Russell’s fastest lap.

Williams He also suffered. Carlos Sainz He stopped on the track without being able to find gear, forcing the officials to remove him, leaving the Spaniard with no recorded time.

The outlook looks complicated for Cadillac, with Pérez and Bottas approximately four seconds off the pace, which is consistent with what they showed during preseason testing. With the classification approaching, Checo finds itself at a crossroads: the data it so desperately needed is still non-existent, and the gap with the leaders seems unbridgeable in the short term.
