Russell, sunk and lost before Antonelli’s review in the Mercedes pit: “Right now, I have no answers, otherwise I wouldn’t be in this situation”
George Russell He is having a great disappointment this season. The British driver had a great opportunity before him to take the title of world champion of Formula 1 after mercedes was the one who best understood the new regulations of the Great Circus.
The vast majority pointed to the British as the top favorite for the crown after the preseason and, after the first race of the season, Russell was the logical bet with the level shown against Australia. However, From China we saw a tremendous level of Kimi Antonelli with which he is going to be crowned world champion. After the ninth victory of the season for the Italian in Austin, he only needs to add two more points in Mexico to celebrate in style the fact of becoming the youngest champion in history.
Antonelli takes 123 points from Russell with only 125 already at stake. The young transalpine beating of the already experienced Russell entered few pools. And Austin’s career was another review that’s hard to explain. The British finished almost a minute behind his teammatesomething that not even George himself could explain.
“Yes, it has been a very bad day. The truth is that I don’t really know why. I probably did six laps out of 50 where the pace was good. The others were well below the pace, so I don’t know where the performance has gone; I have to understand it. I have to come back stronger for Mexico,” he said in statements collected by the official F1 website.
“I don’t have the answers right now, and if I did, I wouldn’t be in this situation.. So, yeah, I have to try to figure it out with my team,” concluded an incredulous George.
No one doubts Russell’s talent. The Briton managed to beat a seven-time world champion like Hamilton in two of the three seasons they coincided at Mercedes. But, for that reason, the disappointment that 2026 is being is so great. lExpectations collided with harsh reality and in 2027 another campaign like the present one cannot be allowed. Antonelli’s review is being too harsh. You have to change your mentality and be able to turn the situation around.
