“My ambition is to win a Rugby Championship”: the statement of an English legend about the Southern Hemisphere tournament
Shaun Edwardshistoric player of Englandstated that he was very interested in training one of the giants of the Southern Hemisphere while planning his future after the World Cup 2027 with Francewhere he is a defense coach.
Edwards mentioned that he is open-minded about his future. “To be honest, my ambition is to win a Rugby Championship. I would love to be part of the All Blacks, the Springboks or maybe Argentina”he said on BBC Radio 5 Live.
Then the Englishman added: “Most of the world champions came from the Southern Hemisphere, and I would love to be able to face top-level teams like that”. It should be noted that the only team from the North that won a World Cup was England in 2003, all other editions were in the hands of South Africa (4- 1995, 2007, 2019, 2023), New Zealand (3- 1987, 2011, 2015) and Australia (2- 1991, 1999).
Known as one of the best defense coaches in the game, Edwards was part of the multi-championship staff at Wasps, and then joined Warren Gatland’s coaching staff at Wales, where they won four Six Nations. Since moving to France after the 2019 World Cup, the Englishman has helped Los Galos win a Grand Slam in 2022, as well as back-to-back titles in 2025 and 2026.
