The Plan for the Buenos Aires Autodrome was announced and the visit of the Motorcycling World Cup was confirmed. Will there be more?

The motogp landing in Buenos Aires was cooking over low heat. Dorna, the company that governs the World Cup, had already set his eyes in the Argentine capital and the Quote of Termas de Río Hondo had an expiration date in the 2025 edition, as advanced in this medium. The last attempts of a last race in Santiago del Estero in 2026 shipwrecked. Finally, on the morning of this Monday came the announcement of the works plan for the Oscar and Juan Gálvez Autodrome in Buenos Aires to receive MotoGP from March 2027 and under a four -year contract.

“This is the first step, the next will be to achieve the return of Formula 1. In October the works of the autodrome will be started so that it is in international conditions,” says Jorge Macri, head of the Government of Buenos Aires in the middle of the main straight of the Oscar and Juan Gálvez of the Argentine capital. After the rigor speech, the mayor dispensed and retired without answering questions to the press that tried to see something from the assigned position, because the sun was well in front. The presentation was completed with the presence of Carlos Ezpeleta (sports director of Dorna), Fabián Turnes (Secretary of Sports of the City) and Hermann Tilke, the German engineer who projected the works on the layout.

The autodrome project is very deep. “The identity for the story he has will be taken care of, his spirit will be taken care of,” Macri clarified in his speech, knowing that the lovers of history will cry in the sky with the reforms. The property will close in October and the remodeling works that will end in March 2027 (there will be no activity in 2026) will begina few days before the date that MotoGP will assign to the Argentina GP of Buenos Aires. This will be its name, because the city will be the one that appears strongly, because the investment for the works and for the motorcycling career will leave the CABA coffers. As Tilke confirmed, you have to refine the pencil a bit, but to leave the motorcycle ready for MotoGP, 100 million dollars will be needed.

The work will be divided into two phases: MotoGP, which will begin in October, and Formula 1, which would then be done if the negotiations advance. The remodeling will include a new drawing on the track of Buenos Aires that will be the only variant that will exist. Today there are multiple drawings: 6, 7, 8, 9, 12, 15 … That will not exist anymore. For example, the Salotto curvón so characteristic of 12 will never be part of the geography of the races. The asphalt stroke in disuse and without chances of connecting it with the new drawing that will be released in 2027 will remain. Starts will collapse to take the track to an area where it is used today as a parking lot when there are events (to the side of Roca Avenue) And that way the lake will be next to the layout, not in the middle as currently. Boxes buildings will also go back (the current will not be thrown down). The boxes terrace will be modernized and roofed and a totally new paddock will be assembled, with an important water, hydraulic and electricity work, one of the weakest parts of the current infrastructure. As for the stands, for MotoGP the capacity will be 90,000 spectators and for F1 it will stretch at 125,000. Spaces for recitals and areas will be assembled so that the public can move from one place to another.

The entire project is under the aegis of Tilke, a man close to F1 and designer of many circuits: Sochi, Las Vegas, Austin, Bahrain, Baku, Shanghai, Yas Marina, Sepang, just to name a few. The German was not the first election by OSD, the company of Mendoza Orlando Terranova (pilot of several participations in the Dakar) and local promoter of the arrival of MotoGP. It was Orly who was at the head of the World Cup quotes in Termas de Río Hondo and the Superbike in San Juan. Jarno Zaffelli, the man who designed the track of Santiago del Estero, was the one who carried out the first project. When Terranova traveled to the Miami GP of F1 and met with Stefano Domenicali (CEO of the category), the Italian recommended the Pope de Osd to work with Tilke. Zaffelli has already provided his services to F1, in fact, he is the man behind the design of the Madrid layout that will receive the F1 in 2026, but in recent times there were conflicts between Jarno and the construction company that delayed the works. Faced with this panorama, it is not surprising that in F1 “they advise calling Tilke” for a project. In fact, Hermann was hired as a promoter of the Madrid GP to organize Marketi and sports movements, but without getting into the situation of the construction of the track. Tilke is a promoter of Madrid without risk, because he was hired under pay, not as a common promoter. “I’m not going to talk about that,” the German told AM850.com when he asked him for the career of the Spanish capital.

When the German engineer took over, he had to draw a new and proper project, not to continue with Zaffelli because there could be interest problems. Once everything was over, it appeared before FIM (International Motorcycle Federation), Dorna, F1 and FIA (International Automobile Federation). The presentation with F1 was made in the last GP of Great Britain, played in Silverstone. The track for both categories would have a difference: for F1 the same of MotoGP would be used with the aggregate of two more curves, which will represent 500 meters more track. In addition, from Argentina they hope to convince F1 (if necessary) that they accept the boxes as they are, because F1 asks for five meters for the PIT and in Buenos Aires is lower. The works will be in charge of the AUSA company, a company that has the city government as a majority shareholder and is responsible for Buenos Aires highways. As assured to AM850.com, the total budget of the work is already, with which there would be no risks of stopping the work.

With MotoGP confirmed by four editions (2027-2030), it only remains to know what can happen with Formula 1. They hope that, seeing the Buenos Aires project underway, with the works of the Autodrome aimed and with the purchase of the Visit of MotoGP closed, the possibility grows. It is worth a fact: Dorna has just been bought by Liberty Media, the company that manages the F1 and behind the arrival in the country of the highest category is also OSD as a local promoter. Of course, Argentina competes against other places that intend to receive F1 as Thailand, whose government made available a budget of 1.5 billion dollars to receive the World Cup since 2028. “Here we will be more austere, but when they see the people who can carry in this country, I do not know if the thousands of millions will matter so much,” they told AM850.com.
