Mboko is injured and Serena Williams’ continuity at Queen’s is up in the air

The number nine in the world, Victoria Mboko slipped and apparently injured her knee during their round of 16 match against Karolina Pliskova at the Queen’s Club WTA tournament this Wednesday. had to withdraw and her participation in the doubles quarterfinals with Serena Williams could be in doubt.

The 19-year-old Canadian teamed up with Williams to win a doubles match on Tuesday, as the legendary 44-year-old American returned to competition after nearly four years away from the sport. After beating third seeds Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Erin Routliffe, they were scheduled to face Leylah Fernandez and Laura Siegemund in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

Mboko, who lost 6-2 and 3-4 against the powerful Czech player, had a breakout opportunity, but fell heavily on the slippery grass behind the baseline when trying to change direction. After being helped onto the net, she looked uncomfortable and affected, and chose to leave.

Hours earlier, on a rainy day in the tournament prior to Wimbledon, the second seed, Amanda Anisimova, easily beat the German Laura Siegemund 6-1 and 6-3, qualifying for the quarterfinals against her American compatriot Iva Jovic, who easily defeated Alexandra Eala 6-2 and 6-2.
