Mbappé confesses that he was close to going to Liverpool

Kylian Mbappé He confesses in an interview with The Athletic that he was close to signing for the Liverpool when he was still active in the Monaco. It was before making the leap to Paris Saint-Germain when the destination could have been Anfield to play for the team then led by Jurgen Klopp.

It was in 2017 when Mbappé decided to join PSG despite the fact that Monaco, as its vice president confirmed months later Vadim Vasiliev, had reached an agreement with Real Madrid for the transfer of the player in exchange for 180 million euros. It was the first of several failed attempts by the white club to incorporate him.

His mother, a Liverpool fan

“It happened a long time ago, when I was at Monaco. I had to make a decision and I was very close to Liverpool. My mother was a big fan of Klopp and it was her favorite destination. “I wanted him to go there.”says Mbappé.

“I didn’t listen to the offer because I wanted to play in my city, in Paris. I didn’t want to leave my country until I was older, but, yes, my mother always said ‘Liverpool, you will play at Anfield, it will be crazy for you'”, reveals the French star.

In the interview, Mbappé acknowledges that his mother came to Liverpool to begin negotiations with the ‘red’ club and that she was delighted with what she saw there. “He went to Liverpool and fell in love. He went to several games, to see the atmosphere, and because he wanted to imagine what it would be like for me to be in that stadium,” says the current Real Madrid player.,

The footballer himself also met with Klopp at that time, although an agreement was not reached and he ended up joining PSG in 2017 in a bizarre operation: he was then loaned without paying anything in return with the commitment that in 2018 he would pay 180 million euros. After four seasons in Paris, in 2024 he finally joined Real Madrid.
